What This Test Measures

DHEA-S is the sulfated (storage) form of DHEA, the most abundant steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands. DHEA-S levels decline steadily with age and serve as a marker of adrenal function. Low DHEA-S may indicate adrenal insufficiency or chronic stress.

Some TRT protocols include DHEA supplementation (25-50 mg daily) for men with documented low levels, as exogenous testosterone does not restore DHEA production.

Why This Matters for TRT

Declines with age independently of testosterone. TRT does not restore DHEA levels. Supplementation (25-50 mg OTC) is reasonable for men with documented deficiency.
